General Note

This is a review of the accessibility of the theater, of the lighting/sound/scent design of the show, and a list of content warnings as a way to prep folks with various needs before they go see it.

This is not meant to scare anyone away from seeing the show. Most productions have about the same amount of content warnings and sensory warnings to go along with it, they’re just rarely explicitly written down.

For some people, knowing these things ahead of time makes it easier to enjoy the show because they know what to expect. And, often, makes those people more likely to see it in the first place. I hope that it’s helpful!

I am also happy to clarify any specifics, just send me a message or an email and I will respond when I can.

Theater

Lyceum Theatre

All comments on the accessibility of lighting are in reference to seats in the back right of the balcony

Bathrooms:

  • divided into the gender binary, though there is a sign saying “Please use the restroom that best fits your gender identity and expression”

  • located one level below the orchestra, with an accessible one on the orchestra level, and on the far right of the balcony (unclear if there are restrooms on the mezzanine level or not, seems like no)

Other theater accessibility:

  • the theater has a step-free entrance to the entire orchestra; there is no elevator

  • the theatre offers infrared assistive listening devices and handheld CC and AD devices

Light/Sound

General:

  • I did not need earplugs for this show

  • there is medium volume music playing pre-show, also note that this theater is fairly dark (especially at the top of the balcony) in contrast to the purple-lit curtain

  • the sensory accessibility of this show is similar to that of Yellow Face - it has quick blackouts throughout the various scenes, but otherwise very few light cues until the end section which is still fairly tame on movement

The Show: (will try to make this as spoiler-free as possible)

  • purple-lit curtain fades through many colors during the overture

  • “I’ll be honest that wasn’t great” (after bar) - lightning and water moving projection ~2 min, not super flashy

  • the gunshot is fairly quiet, happens just after Booth enters the box

  • smoke, moving bulb lights and sweeping down lights - bulbs continue throughout, smoke & moving lights are quite brief, there are also various on/off lights that aren’t super flashy and it ends with a streamer cannon (~8 min)

Content Advisory

  • lots of sexual innuendo and explicit sexual jokes

  • alcoholism

  • presence of a gun
