General Note

This is a review of the accessibility of the theater, of the lighting/sound/scent design of the show, and a list of content warnings as a way to prep folks with various needs before they go see it.

This is not meant to scare anyone away from seeing the show. Most productions have about the same amount of content warnings and sensory warnings to go along with it, they’re just rarely explicitly written down.

For some people, knowing these things ahead of time makes it easier to enjoy the show because they know what to expect. And, often, makes those people more likely to see it in the first place. I hope that it’s helpful!

I am also happy to clarify any specifics, just send me a message or an email and I will respond when I can.

Also please note that I make these while seeing a show for the first time, so I may miss some cues or be slightly off as to their placement/cue line!

Theater

(Longacre Theatre)

All comments on the accessibility of lighting are in reference to seats in the center mezzanine

Bathrooms:

  • divided into the binary, though there is a sign that says “Please use the restroom that best fits your gender identity or expression.”

  • located a flight of stairs below the orchestra and up in the balcony level with an accessible restroom on the orchestra and balcony levels

  • the basement bathrooms have different entrance/exit doors, with the entrance on the staircase side

Other theater accessibility:

  • there is an elevator in this theater, though it only goes to the balcony; the orch is the only entire step-free level

  • they offer closed captioning, assistive listening, loop receivers, and audio description devices, available on the orchestra level

Light/Sound/Scent

General:

  • there are bulb lights on the boxes on either side of the stage, they are not used during the show

  • the very opening of Act I is quite loud but I did not need earplugs for the rest of it. I needed them on and off throughout Act II, though I’m not sure if Act II is actually louder than Act I or if it was just that I went into the show with a worsening headache

  • the silver frames used and moved throughout the show sometimes cause occasional strobe when spun around

  • nearly every song ends with a quick light on the final beat

  • there are lots of random quick white downlights that happen throughout the show, I definitely missed many in here

  • there are also LEDs that frame everything onstage, they are not super bright and when they move it is slow enough or sectioned enough to not cause eye strain

  • overall light/sound accessibility is very similar to Spamalot and semi-similar to &Juliet.

Act I:

  • Opening - white LED travels up the curve of the stage. The beat drops when it hits the top and then everything is loud with moving LEDs and potentially some haze for about 60 seconds

  • Unseen - when she is singing there is static on the scrim behind here that then becomes static-y film

  • she has a sparkly necklace that causes accidental strobe

  • small blue light pulses on beat during scene with mom

  • white pulse when her veil is put on, 3 after that, and then a larger one with a big boom, followed by quick transition to red

  • “the tzar is gone and so are the corrupt classes” - white moves over the orchestra, then to center stage

  • pulses after the bottom right guard sings about jewels

  • another moving white light on the orchestra when she’s on the ground center stage

  • after this are a lot of quick on/off red or white lights & moving LEDs for the rest of Our Time

  • “a whore” - small red flashes, smoke, moving projections

  • very slowly moving projection (left to right) during train

  • light shift when husband yells at her after her coat is taken off

  • slight pulsing light & moving projections over Kizette when Tamara calls her after selling paintings

  • “we do not control the world” - moving projection behind them, then car with headlights pointed at the audience comes out & there is a loud moment (also occasional white on/off downlight)

  • Don’t Bet Your Heart

    • “what can I say, girls?” - 3 very quick light changes

    • the Eiffel tower bulbs alternate and other downlights alternate/move during the dance break

    • loud boom when Tamara is on the lower landing

    • by the time the cymbals show up there’s tons of alternating/moving lights, also cymbal crashes (you can see them live)

  • Perfection - lots of white on/off downlights and moving spotlights, also some haze - there’s a break in the middle, gets flashier the second time & loud blackout

  • quick lights on/off after husband walks off

  • quick light shift after “ma chérie” dialogue

  • bar scene is fairly dim, mostly lit blue/purple

  • scene after the bar everything becomes really purple to the point where you cannot see the stage, not very bright

  • some light movement during Woman Is but not much

Act II:

  • entrance similar to Act I, has a flash

  • Pari Will Always Be Pari - lots of quick light shifts, white flashes, static-y and flashy film projections, and moving yellow lights around

    • when Marinetti is on the lower landing it starts to get flashier, with increasing white light speed until it becomes strobey (overall lasts maybe 60 seconds, though it stops for a small break and then worsens)

  • lots of sparkles after the golden apple bit, also the two mirror things cause accidental strobe

  • bang noises when they sing on the stairs after Rafaela is introduced

  • “we’ll fight with all that we are” - quick white on

  • “again” - downlights on quickly and more moving/static-y projections - then the car returns with its headlights toward the audience

  • white moving over the audience after the flag, followed by small red flashes and haze

  • “but tonight– tonight we’re still free” - small white flash

  • quick light shift after husband’s “I CAN’T!”

  • quick light shift after Marinetti exits

  • “I can’t let go” (Rafaela), then Marinetti walks out - lots of moving white lights and fairly loud

  • husband’s “it’s too late” - low vibrating bass and moving projections

  • white light on, then dim white strobe at the audience for maybe ~20 seconds?

  • “I tried” - moving and flashing light - maybe ~30-45 sec?

  • “make the world stop” - light change on “stop”

  • loud blackout after the blue brightens

  • during bows, spotlights move onto the side boxes when they point to cheer for the orchestra
