General Note
This is a review of the accessibility of the theater, of the lighting/sound/scent design of the show, and a list of content warnings as a way to prep folks with various needs before they go see it.
This is not meant to scare anyone away from seeing the show. Most productions have about the same amount of content warnings and sensory warnings to go along with it, they’re just rarely explicitly written down.
For some people, knowing these things ahead of time makes it easier to enjoy the show because they know what to expect. And, often, makes those people more likely to see it in the first place. I hope that it’s helpful!
I am also happy to clarify any specifics, just send me a message or an email and I will respond when I can.
Theater
August Wilson Theatre
All comments on the accessibility of lighting are in reference to seats on the right side of the orchestra. Lighting is usually more accessible from the center and/or mezzanine.
Bathrooms:
no explicitly gender neutral options
located downstairs (below the orchestra, near the entrance) and there is one non-gendered accessible restroom on the orchestra level by the stair lift
Other theater accessibility:
there is no elevator but there is a stair lift to reach orchestra level
with advanced notice, they can supply captioning, audio description, and assistive listening options

Light/Sound/Scent
General:
The set includes a lot of mirrors (and lights around the stage that, when off, act like mirrors) and a lot of things randomly reflect/flash on them throughout
Generally fine without earplugs, though the overture and some group numbers may be too loud for some
Act I:
Overture - lights around the stage move (gives a slight flash effect) lights are pointed towards mirrors around the arch which reflect onto the audience, & flashing stage lights on beat at the end
First Ziegfeld number - lots of very shiny and sparkly clothing as well as moving hand mirrors. Also moving lights
after People - arch moving lights
Don’t Rain On My Parade - arch moving lights at the end
Act II:
Who Taught Her Everything… - arch lights flash during kick line
Temporary Arrangement (Nick’s song) - flashing white lights throughout the number
Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat - the rifles reflect light when moved around and there’s a flashing light and loud confetti cannon near the end
The scene where Fanny wears the light purple outfit in the living room - Nick bangs the table/yells once
Dream sequence after The Music That Makes Me Dance - uplights on the audience in the back that move up the back wall
Content Warnings
This kinda contains spoilers! Be warned!
General:
Misogyny
Light emotional abuse
That’s kinda it.
