General Note
This is a review of the accessibility of the theater, of the lighting/sound/scent design of the show, and a list of content warnings as a way to prep folks with various needs before they go see it.
This is not meant to scare anyone away from seeing the show. Most productions have about the same amount of content warnings and sensory warnings to go along with it, they’re just rarely explicitly written down.
For some people, knowing these things ahead of time makes it easier to enjoy the show because they know what to expect. And, often, makes those people more likely to see it in the first place. I hope that it’s helpful!
I am also happy to clarify any specifics, just send me a message or an email and I will respond when I can.
Theater
Stephen Sondheim Theatre
All comments on the accessibility of lighting are in reference to seats on the R orchestra about halfway down
Bathrooms:
located on the middle floor (between the mezzanine and orchestra)
divided into the binary, but both have a sign saying “this restroom may be used by any person regardless of gender identity or expression”
Other theater accessibility:
the theater entry has a step-free entrance and there are elevators to every level (they’re not super clearly marked so be sure to ask!)
I was not able to find any information in regards to whether they offer captioning, audio description, or assistive listening options, but that doesn’t mean those options do not exist

Light/Sound/Scent
General:
I would definitely recommend ear defenders/earplugs for this show if you are noise sensitive
I won’t go on about accessible humor here, I did that in my Shucked review, but this show used a lot of the same tools so the humor is super accessible
The majority of projections take place high up on the stage, making it a separate eyeline from the actors, so motion from it is much easier on the eyes
People in the front row may get conversed with during the pre-show and may have some glitter tossed on them during “Domino”
When you enter the theater there is music playing (it’s not too loud and it’s instrumental) - this music also plays during intermission
Pre-Show:
About ~5 min to show time actors slowly come out on stage (lights stay up)
& Juliet sign flashes to life with neon colors when one actor hits the jukebox
Another actor turns on the back wall lights with a little flash but they’re so small it’s not really noticeable
Act I:
Opening - the &Juliet flashes neon a lot with carnival lights in the center
Shakespeare entrance - moving arc lights on audience and back wall flashing/interchanging lights on audience
Verona projection flashes just before One More Time
Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely - vibrating bass when bed comes out
Domino -
when May says “bass drum” there are vibrations
when the set goes out, there are lots of interchanging/moving/flashing downlights (they don’t really have a strobe effect but are flashing regardless - I personally didn’t find it straining)
May mentions “Paris” - LEDs flash around the proscenium. These lights tend to move directionally and you often don’t notice them, but can sometimes have a strobing effect, especially when bright
After “your carriage awaits” - more flashing lights
When the carriage goes - quick moving projection and occasional flashes of the LEDs around the stage
When Juliet takes out camera - LEDs around stage get brighter and faster
Blow (the ball scene) - SO many white strobes and interchanging/moving lights. And some moving bright arc lights directed at the audience. It’s a rave basically
Francois’ watch causes occasional accidental strobe
End of Confident - flashing and moving downlights on beat
Teenage Dream - quickly changing lights
/Break Free - alternating arc lights (these aren’t super flashy) but then also has flashing and moving downlights as well (on top of the quickly changing lights where the projections are)
I Kissed A Girl - lots of flashing followed by flashing & moving lights (I wrote “after ––” and I don’t know what the second word says, I seem to remember this is later in the song)
After the “I will – Shakespeare!” line, there are sudden flashing lights, loud geyser things go off once (think pyrotechnics but steam), and lights on the audience
When Juliet & Romeo are in the same room for the first time, there are tons of white strobes
Act II:
The act starts with a loud noise crescendo followed by the lights going down
Juliet’s shiny blue shirt causes accidental strobe
BAR and Je T’aime signs (BAR is just above height level and Je T’aime is in the sky) are neon
Since U Been Gone -
tiny white lights flash on beat during first chorus
moving downlights on stage during the second
One More Try - when the moon starts to descend, there are blue twinkle lights pointed at the audience
Problem/Can’t Feel My Face
projections are bright red and quite flashy
significant bass vibrations
flashes from red to blue when Romeo appears
moving arc lights down onto the audience
later in the number there are flashing red and white lights that have a full strobe effect
full white strobes at the end of the song
Boy Band scene
lots of flashing lights on the audience but it doesn’t get strobey until the middle of the song
the mics are occasionally accidental strobes
Roar
low bass vibrations
flashing white lights during the first chorus, followed by a full white strobe, moving arc lights on the audience, and interchanging downlights
confetti falls everywhere as she rises
full white strobes at the end of the number
Can’t Stop The Feeling
flashy projections, lights on the audience, and flashing LEDs around the stage (none of this feels strobey, but it is very flashy) & confetti at the end
Roar (reprise - after bows) - moving arc lights on audience and full white strobes at the end
When Anne & Juliet point at the “&Juliet” sign, it flashes neon
Content Warnings
This kinda contains spoilers! Be warned!
General:
References to suicide (...it’s Romeo & Juliet)
Abusive family dynamics
Brief mention of child death (during the pre-wedding heart to heart)
Transphobia
